That's not really true in this NBA anymore. You need to be able to score to win the chip nowadays, because offence is really difficult to stop when a team gets hot from 3.

 

Defence is important, and I'm not saying a team with elite defence and good to great offence can't win the chip; but Boston's offence in the regular season, nor in that series, hasn't been good to great. Mediocre would be putting it kindly. 

 

Mediocre offence, even with historically amazing defence, doesn't win you chips. It wins you a couple rounds at most.
