Expansion drafts often have a minimum salary rule, where in the draft itself a team must add a certain amount of salary.  Large contracts are not necessarily safe.

You are not helping me deal with my irrational fear one bit. You should have explained that there's no way an expansion can happen this summer. I will now retreat to my safe place.

Yeah, it won't happen this summer, I was just engaging in some fun speculation.

Board would need to vote on expansion at least a season in advance.

And remember when Masai drafted him there was this big sigh of "Not another Bruno!!1"

Indeed.  He is not anything like Bruno.

I don't remember anyone comparing him to Bruno. I do remember bunch of people wanting to draft Sabonis instead

The Bruno comparisons were more with Siakam, who was kind of out of nowhere (especially with the bigger names who were slipping down the draft - though even there he was a slight reach rather than a guy who hadn't shown up on a single mock ever).  The Poeltl pick we saw coming from miles away - he was the consensus 9th guy in what was being sold as an 8 man draft.  A lot of people were disappointed we went with the "safe" pick (I was certainly at least mildly disappointed, though not shocked).

I thought the big scoff on Poeltl was that he would be another Bargnani [tongue]

I don't know about jaw dropping....I foresee a Steven Adams type player.

I dunno....Adams is such a bruiser in the paint on both ends.  I love Adams but Poeltl is a lot faster than Adams and can defend further out. I think Poeltl's offense has a little more finesse to it.

his offense is great even without a shot because he is such a good passer (6 assists vs pistons), decent ball handler and he makes cuts that ppl are forced to defend even when he doesnt get the ball, he never stops moving and with his athleticism you have to respect him, its a nightmare for other bigs to cover especially if they arent as mobile and very few 4s are.

He really has Draymond like awareness of where ppl are and and how to make good off ball movement to allow the shooters and others space.

Anybody who thinks Siakims offense is really bad is just looking at basic shooting numbers and not the overall picture.

Yeah, his offensive instincts are great and this season he really proved his inside game.

That being said, his shooting is atrocious, ling way to go to get to even a Draymond green level.

Then again, when he'll get there, he will be an all star level guy.

As it stands now, he's a positive at both ends, most nights. But will be interesting to see what happens in the playoffs, when a lack of shooting gets magnified greatly.

Because it is irrational :)

We can easily protect our team by holding on to the 5 starters minus ibaka + the 5 bench rotation guys minus miles. If someone takes Powell, clearly our rotation won't suffer all that much since he's not a part of it.

And ibaka, would be a loss, but at 20m/year, and with siakam nearly ready to start, it's not something we couldn't withstand.

If we lost both Powell and Ibaka, how far under the cap would we be assuming the same cap as this year? I assume not much..?

I'm just thinking if it's not insignificant, whether somehow shedding ibaka can be good for us.

We would not be under the cap.

But also, in basically every expansion draft ever, teams can only lose one player.

you can't really ask more from a C in today's nba then what Poetl brings to the table.

if he's a Steven Adams for his career, i take that hell yeah.

And I don't know if Poetl had the same reaction from when we drafted Bruno. He was totally unknown. You kinda knew what you were gonna get from Purtle and he played in Utah so you can see some highlights from him against Div 1 players, 2nd year totally spiked and improved
