pretty sure the coach of that dallas team was avery Johnson, and it took firing him (despite the record wins) and hiring Carlisle to win that title ... so there's that 😉

That's not quite right.  Avery Johnson last coached the Mavs in 2007-08 and won the COY in 2005-06 (in his 1st year) when the team went 60-22.  The Mavs then declined in win totals the next 2 years.  Carlisle took over in 08-09 and didn't win the title till 2010-11, 3 years later.  That was also the year the Mavs brought in Tyson Chandler - which solidified their defense in the frontcourt.

They won 60 games his first season and made the finals , 67 the next and lost in the first round, then 51 and lost again in the first round. Pretty similar to Casey's tenure ....

Well, if you stretch it as far as you can you can make anything look similar.  The point of my reply was he wasn't fired the year or year after he won COY.  He had a 67 win team in year 2 and then stumbled backwards 16 games in his last year.  Avery took over a winning program and roster from Don Nelson, they Mavs had won 50+ in 5 straight years.  Avery was hired to take the team to the promised land and couldn't climb over the hump; unlike Casey that revived a struggling roster that barely won 22 games the year before he took over.  Not the same situation.

As for Avery, he got 3-1/2 years to deliver a Championship with a small window remaining and couldn't - by now the Mavs had won 50+ games in 8 straight years, including that 67 win season.  When Carlisle came up it was a clear upgrade over Avery so you take it.  That and they signed Chandler who was the missing piece imo.  If Carlisle was available now I'd say let Casey go.  There are not many coaches I'd say that for, maybe 2-3 and if they are not available then stay the course and enhance the roster this summer.
