powell shooting 80% from 3 also had something to do with it. When powell hits his 3s, it's hard to argue with his impact, the problem is when he doesn't, which is more often.

Your post also shows why the team wants DD play more of a "PG" role. It makes a lot of sense for two reasons:
1) he's still the team's best player at getting into the paint and finishing at the rim. When he penetrates, defences collapse around him, thus freeing up shooters.

2) allows Lowry to play off the ball and be a shooter. Suddenly, there are three shooters with Lowry, Ibaka, and Powell. All of them should shoot 35% or better from 3. Miles can come off the bench and provide another option.

In terms of balance, effectiveness, and efficiency across both units, Powell starting and Miles working with the 2nd unit makes the most sense. Come crunch time, we'll probably see Miles in the game along with KL, DD, Ibaka, and likely Powell.

I think the main reason DD handles the offense more is that he's more comfortable/capable doing it. His passing has improved dramatically over the last 2 seasons and I'm not talking about pure passing skills - more mindset than anything.

Last season , second half of it in particular, he's more often likely to drive looking for a pass. In the past, he was always looking first, second and third, for his own shot and only passing when he had no choice (and often forcing it even then).

His ball-handling skills have improved a lot too and, as you said, we also needed lowry's shooting due to the pathetic display from carol and siakam. Once lowry went down, we didn't really have a decent alternative.

Until we have some injuries, we won't see OG outside garbage time and even then it will be a few minutes.

I get that it's a very limited sample size but I think you're sleeping on him man, his physical tools & defensive skills alone are worthy of him getting more minutes. The fact that he is adding a 3pt shot now is just gravy.
He's the kind of player you don't want to bury & you have to find a way to get him more experience.

They might experiment with OG at the PF but his natural position is SF and I can see him taking a lot of minutes by seasons end.

Dude.  It was not Powell breaking the traps. It was spacing.  It was getting JV out of there.  It was better defense so they could run and not have to play every time in the half court.

Norm was the 4th option after Ibaka and when you're that deep it causes problems.  And almost every time he got the ball, it's been a long time, but my memory is it was 3 point range and AFTER someone ran at him to block a shot he drove, or there was nobody in the way and he drove or cut.  He played well.  But this was about fit, spacing and defense.  Not that he's a great ball handler breaking the trap. There were a lot of guys you could play there that are in the league, the key was playing small and guarding the PNR and spacing.

Don't much care which one they start.  Either fits.  But Miles can sub in better for the 4 and 5 (Ibaka moving to c) and norm can't. But you could also shift Miles and sub in Powell each time.  Again, its the only spot we have a question at and it doesn't much matter, either will be good.  But Powell at least defends better.  Preseason its hard to tell, but Miles has missed a ton of rotations.  JV doesn't make anything easy on defense and DD isn't getting the tough assignment with that workload on offense and that defense, so maybe don't add the third unless the goal is just to outscore the other team.

Powell has been struggling thus far in the starting 5.  Still early and just an observation, not saying to move him to the bench and have CJ replace him, but he needs to find himself and do other things when he is not scoring.

Carroll.  with how the team is playing now and Carroll's skillset he would have been perfect.  Too bad that all feel apart with injuries, system and eventually chemistry in the 2 years prior.  ATM, he's playing extremely well for the Nets.

Quote:

DeMarre Carroll scored 18 points with seven rebounds, one assist, four steals and three 3-pointers in 32 minutes against the Cavs on Wednesday.

Advice: During his time in Toronto, Carroll would flop more often than not. In Brooklyn, he's basically batting 1.000 for hitting value in DFS and he continues to rise up the ranks in standard leagues. Coach Kenny Atkinson has closed with him as a small forward or as a stretch four, especially when the Nets are playing from behind. On the season, Carroll is averaging 15.8 points, 6.6 boards, 1.8 assists, 2.0 steals, 0.6 blocks and 2.2 treys. He needs to be owned in all standard leagues.

As for the Raps, I completely agree with Kaddrick, and said many times prior, that the starting 3 spot is going to be for OG.  Makes the most sense, big, strong, confident and has an improving shot - currently shooting 36.4% from 3 which is better than Powell's 27%.  Just a better fit imho.

As for Powell, I'm curious to know what is going on, 3rd year, more minutes and responsibilities yet his 3pt shot is becoming much worse - from 40 to 32 to now 27% (so far for the season).

Offensively. Carroll’s defence has been way bad. I believe without that he had way less value to us.
